We mostly do etching on glass products, even though we can etch on other hard substrates. There are different kinds of etching. Some people like chemical etching, others like frosting and others like sandblasting and light engraving.
We at CNCKrafting we do what we call “Deep etching” meaning we take time to engrave or sandblast until we give the graphic a 2D feel to the touch. We etch or engrave outside and inside the graphics so that they stand out as 2D artwork.
Since wine bottles are pressurized we limit the depth that we can etch or engrave, one sixteenth of an inch. Believe or not that is quite deep to the touch.
If you look at the edges of the text in the close up of the picture above, you can tell how deep we engraved this wine bottle
We always paint the etched areas to the customers color preference. Our experience has taught us that etching or engraving are of white spectrum of color. So, if the bottle is clear glass and has clear contents the etching will blend in and also the label on the other side of the bottle can act as the background to the etching. We do not etch on the side of bottle that has government warning.
